No NSW Fugal Taxonomist

I was a bit sad to read on the State Herbarium of South Australia Research Prospectus of 2008–09 (PDF) that there is no Macrofungal taxonomist employed in NSW.  In South Australia Professor Sir J.B. Cleland found 400 type species during his career, collecting 16,000 specimens for the State Herbarium. Many papers and books have been written on his findings and revisions of his collectionshave found even more species.

If we had someone in NSW to do the same work , we certainly find a myriad new species. Think about how many new novel enzymes and genes could be contained in their genomes. As climate change affects increasingly alters our environment, it is imperative that we sequence the DNA of as many of these lifeforms as possible to preserve them for the study of future generations.
